The "Natural Light" art exhibition was recently held at the CJ Arte space in Shanghai K11. This exhibition not only brought works by classic Western masters, but also brought more than ten works by Claude Pissarro, grandson of Impressionist master Pissarro, to China for the first time.
The "Natural Light" exhibition includes many works by famous artists in the history of Western art. Among them, in "The Resting Shepherdess", the figure outlined in black is as solid and heavy as a sculpture, the holy blue is a traditional metaphor of Christianity, the stillness of the flock and the silence of the shepherdess create the tranquility of the whole picture, and the small-leaved trees behind the shepherdess evoke people's thoughts on the traditional Italian landscape. "The Resting Shepherdess" solidifies the religious labor scene with its affectionate brushstrokes, forming an idyllic intertextuality of light and shadow with the representative master of naturalism, "The Washerwoman of Chelles". Curator Jennifer Zhou reveals the deep shift of naturalism from religious belief to social reality through the juxtaposition of two classic masters.

CJ Arte Jian Space’s first exhibition

Camille Corot (1796-1875), The Pond in Normandy, oil on canvas, 67x56.5cm
As the grandson of Camille Pissarro, a representative Impressionist painter, Claude Pissarro brought 11 oil paintings on canvas. Claude Pissarro has been immersed in the world of art since he was a child. His grandfather was the Impressionist master Pissarro who had a great influence on Monet's creation. Claude's brushstrokes continue the Pissarro family's eternal pursuit of natural light. The lake water, branches, blooming flowers, and people wandering in the landscape floating in the wind evoke the audience's memories of Impressionism, and contrast with the naturalistic realistic brushstrokes of Corot's "Pond in Normandy" and Daumier's "Venetian Nobles", allowing viewers to deeply understand the classic forms of "nature" with their own characteristics in different periods of art history.

"Moisson chez Jourdon, Forges-les-Bains (Essonne)" (Wheat Harvest at Jourdon's, Forges-les-Bains), H. Claude Pissarro (1935-present), oil on canvas, 38 x 46 cm
The exhibition also presents abstract artworks by Chinese contemporary artists such as Yang Liming, Chen Rongyi, and Zhou Jianjun. The curator uses "natural light" as a clue to present the spiritual portrayal of abstract ink painting and contemporary painting in the exhibition. The creation of abstract art turns to the internalization of nature into the soul. The works of three abstract artists with different styles reorganize the physical experiment of the media, the philosophical speculation of technology, and the cultural genes of the East and the West on the theme of "nature".
